Affordable Self-Catering Accommodation
Many of the lodges in and around the Kruger Park have become so expensive that it is impossible for the normal person to afford anything but standard rest-camp accommodation, which unfortunately is not really up to scratch. If you are into self-catering and self-drive vacations, why not try Khumbula iAfrica. The accommodation is very luxurious and spotlessly clean, and the staff are the most helpful you will ever experience. The cottage is located in a nature reserve where fences are not permitted, so the animals come right up to your patio. It even has its own private waterhole.
The game that visit the cottage are mostly giraffe, antelope, warthogs, etc, but Khumbula iAfrica is on the southern border of the Kruger Park, namely the Crocodile River. It's a very easy 5 minute walk down to the river, which is fenced for safety, where you regularly see lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippos, crocodiles, and loads of other species. Very good chances of seeing kills. The bird life is outstanding too. The staff will carry some stools down to the river for you, as well as your refreshments in a cooler bag they supply. Beats the hell out of driving around in the park all day looking at bush and waiting for something to materialize!
Although Khumbula iAfrica has a 4-Star grading and is rated Superior by the Automobile Association, you won't believe the rates...very, very affordable! You can sleep 4 people privately in two separate air-conditioned bedrooms, one en suite, for the same price that you can sleep two people in a crummy rest-camp rondavel in the Park! For a small extra fee you can sleep another 4 people in the two open plan lofts that lead out onto a terrace with views over the Kruger Park.
